Using TED Talk as Teaching English

In a teaching-learning process, two very important elements are teaching methods and instructional media. These two aspects are interrelated. The selection of one particular teaching method will affect the appropriate type of teaching medium, although there are still other aspects to be considered in selecting the media, including teaching objectives, the type of tasks and responses that students hope to master after teaching takes place, and the learning context including the characteristics of the students. Nevertheless, it can be said that one of the main functions of teaching media is as a teaching tool that also influences climate, condition, and learning environment arranged and created by the teacher. In addition, one of effective media for teaching English is TED talk.
TED Conferences, LLC (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a media organization which posts talks online for free distribution, under the slogan "ideas worth spreading". TED was founded in February 1984 as a conference, which has been held annually since 1990. TED's early emphasis was technology and design, consistent with its Silicon Valley origins, but it has since broadened its focus to include talks on many scientific, cultural, and academic topics.
TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment, and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.
Teachers can use TED talk in their learning process. For instance, when they teach exposition text in the first grade of Senior High School. The steps are: first, teachers search the video which properly with the material and download it. Second, they ask students for watching the video without using the subtitle. Next, teachers give the text (from the subtitle of the video). Then, teachers ask the student to answer the questions which are given by teachers in the worksheet. Finally, teachers and students discuss the result in the classroom.
In conclusion, TED talk is one of the effective media in teaching English. We can use it to improve four English skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing) as we told before about teaching exposition text in the first grade of Senior High School. We can modify it to be more attractive, as Chinese proverb said that one thousand teachers, one thousand methods. It means that not only teachers who influence the learning process, but also the using media and method in the learning process will be developing the activity in the classroom.

Aku Pergi

Di bawah rintikan hujan, aku berjalan seorang diri. Hatiku ragu menentukan kemanakah tujuan yang akan ku capai. Tetapi, kehendak kaki ku-lah yang menuntun ku untuk mencapai sebuah rumah. Rumah mungil yang penuh kehangatan, kebersamaan, dan kasih sayang. Tak hanya rumah mungil itulah yang aku idamkan. Tetapi, para penghuni rumah itu pula yang aku dambakan. Penghuni yang selalu mengawali hari ku dengan keceriaan dan mengakhiri hari ku dengan kehangatan. Ya,penghuni itu adalah ayah, bunda, dan kakak. Aku sangat bangga dan sangat bersyukur memiliki mereka. Memiliki seorang ayah yang bijaksana, adil, tegas, disiplin, dan menjadi motivator dalam hidupku adalah harta yang luar biasa tak ternilai harganya. Bagaikan menemukan setitik terang cahaya dalam kegelapan, begitulah artinya bunda dalam hidupku. Bunda yang luar biasa sabar, penyayang, dan mempunyai wawasan yang luas. Jidat Lebar aka JENONG

Kalo gue fikir-fikir, nggak selamanya dan nggak selalu orang yang punya jidat lebar bak lapangan golf itu jelek, nggak berguna, dan ya…. gitulah. menurut agama yang gue anut, walaupun orang sejelek apapun, walaupun bentuknya mirip kue cucur, eh, salah. maksud gue, mirip kencur, eh, nggak deh. mirip air mancur, haalah, apa ada gitu ya orang yang mirip air mancur? haduuuh, ada ada aja nih yang bikin pemisalan! tuh, kan. gue lupa sampe mana. oiya, tadi kata gue, walaupun orang itu sejelek apapun, walaupun nggak berbentuk, kita harus tetap mengakui dia sebagai manusia. toh dia kan juga sama-sama diciptakan sama Allah, sama-sama manusia yang punya hati dan punya perasaan. balik maneng to orang yang punya jidat lebar, dan yang tadi gue bilang, orang yang punya jidat lebar nggak selamanya jelek. buktinya, abang gue, bang Aviv.
